The Ravenwood stained glass window is an expression of the client’s voice and sensibilities. The clients came to the project with ingredients: a pair of ravens, a moon and a crystal ball, a dramatic landscape, a nod to Celtic and Nordic mythologies. The stylistic flavors included steampunk and Art Deco. The challenge was working around a 2-inch perimeter sill and a 4-inch mid-sill. My endeavor was to create a design that brought the ingredients together in a souffle of design.
I used the two ravens under a full moon as the starting point. One is perched on a wizened tree branch and the other on a crystal ball, . The challenge created the opportunity for the rest of the design. I suggested using black backed dichroic glass for the shaded areas. These included the raven wing motif with the eternal spheres, the central compass with inner gears and buckles, the deep blue crescent of the three-phase moon, and the upper and lower frame. This provided dramatic color and allowed for detail work. That included runic writing and the steampunk elements.
The Ravenwood stained glass window is now installed in the client’s home office. It offers inspiration as needed and delight at any opportunity.
