Piece Project:  Variations on a theme

Inner Piece Sculpture

The Piece Project consists of three sculptures that feature glass from a single piece of my kiln raked glass.  I wanted each sculpture to be unique and yet have attributes that tied them together:  the raked glass, the color palette, a single square piece of coral glass.  I find starting an abstract design challenging as there seem to be unlimited possibilities. The play on words of “piece” and “peace” provided a pathway that I found intriguing.

Inner Piece was the first idea I wanted to work with.   I made several quick sketches of how I felt inner peace.  I found lines that expressed ideas of balance, being grounded and joyful, making time for reflection.  The vertical aspect of the design with the asymmetric flow, and the cupping shape at the bottom reflect my sense of inner peace.

Piece of Mind has the dual responsibility of activism (“I gave him a piece of my mind!”) and tranquility.  I tried to capture that duality by integrating the laser-like converging lines with the wholistic shape of the egg.  The design has a dynamic energy that is contained.

Piece Process was the final design of the three.  In a world full of turmoil, this concept appealed to me.  As I imagined the kind of energy required to bring divergent purposes together in harmony, a sort of dance emerged.  As in a dance, the movement back and forth often takes unexpected pathways.  Tension is required for success, and the result is a harmonious flow.
