A Front Door Portico – Light, Color, and Line

A front door portico offers an opportunity to add light, color and line

This custom stained glass window adds light, color and line to the client’s front door portico.  The opening in the wall of the portico seemed to call out for an artistic resolution.  The homeowner, a graphic designer, had an idea for a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired design.  The clean lines and deliberate color palette appealed to his design sense.  After a few tweaks, I drew the design to full scale and built the window.

The title of this piece, The Source, comes from several directions.  The client‘s home is situated off a road named for a running spring.  As a fellow artist, we enjoyed several conversations about the sources of inspiration and the artistic endeavor.  With its placement at the entry point of the home, I saw this window as a source of joy that will uplift him and his wife each time they leave the house and welcomes them when they return.

Because the portico is a small, sheltered space, the effect of the light streaming through the window in the morning is quite breath taking.  The warm earth tones and clean lines create a space that envelopes you and fills you up as you start your day.  In the evening, the lighting in the portico creates a warm beacon as night falls.  The driveway leads to that side of the portico where you see the stained glass window aglow as you approach the front door portico.  The Source stained glass window is a lasting addition to the overall beauty of the client’s home.   To see more examples of my work, visit my portfolio of custom stained glass windows.
